(Koostar) Samad Sohomow
Samad qualified as a Mental Health Nurse in 1993 and has worked continuously since in different settings, such as, in-patient units, community care, medium secure unit, A&E department, etc. He is now based in the Harrow Home Treatment Team, where he has worked since 2006 in different roles and responsibilities.
He has completed different courses which have equipped him with the skills and competence to deliver improved care to patients and support colleagues further, such as, Motivational Interviewing, Knowledge Understanding Framework in Personality Disorder, Dual Diagnosis, Leadership and Management courses, etc.
The overarching aim of the Home Treatment Team is to manage mental health crises nearer to home rather than in hospital settings, very much in line with the NHS 5-year strategy. Furthermore, the NHS 5-year strategy clearly states that “mental health is the single largest cause of disability in the UK” and that “physical health and mental health are closely linked with people with chronic and prolonged mental illnesses dying 15 to 20 years earlier than others”.
Samad is one of the lead practitioners in the team and tries to bring positive changes to the team and improve the service and care provided to mental health patients in Harrow. He is keen to embark on his Fellowship project along with duo partner (Montserrat Garcia) to improve the physical health outcomes of mental health patients who are admitted into our care and then, hopefully, extend this to other teams and services in the borough. He believes that the NIHR ARC NWL Fellowship programme will provide him with the understanding and skills required to undertake this QI project.
